Gravity is an innovative tool that allows people with dyslexia to create in three dimensions (3D) using a simple set of rules with a pen and a tablet. The simplicity of our tool allows people with dyslexia, and other reading & writing impairments to create in an innovative intuitive way. Today, we create 3D content using complex CAD software. We have identified this to be challenging for people with learning difficulties. Many students and professionals with dyslexia have a strong spatial awareness, however when putting their ideas in the digital environment there is only one path- through computer aided design (CAD) software. This software is designed to operate through linguistic based commands and mathematical functions. Our innovation provides a new software which relies only on spatial awareness, which empowers dyslexic people to create 3D content more intuitively and efficiently. Now more than ever we are developing 3D printing technologies and 3D creation. It is becoming a skill that we must all possess. Without the proper tools many will be left behind. Gravity allows people with learning difficulties to access 3D creation and the technologies that accompany it.

Insight & Impact

Our research and user testing lead us to Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences, where he states: we all have multiple intelligences ranging from linguistic, mathematical, kinesthetic, spatial, etc. He identifies that people who are less strong in one intelligence might be stronger in others. Dyslexics often struggle with linguistics and are very strong in their spatial intelligence. With Gravity we set out to develop a tool which relies solely on our spatial intelligence. In schools that focus on design and technology it is a challenge for dyslexic students to learn the CAD programs. This is because in order to be efficient in these programs, you must first understand the vocabulary and logic. This problem keeps students from fully engaging and further developing their ideas. For all this reasons, we believe Gravity can have a great impact on students from even younger ages empowering express ideas in 3D. In engineering and creative environments, dyslexic professionals often develop their own tricks to allow them to use CAD more effectively, taking them longer to fully realize their ideas in 3D. Some professionals even choose not use CAD at all because of the challenges faced in education. We are providing an additional tool to the professional work flow, improving productivity and empowering professionals that thought they could never develop this skill.
