‘Challenging ordinary product design, built for extraordinary people’ Being disabled is certainly challenging. Fortunately, there are a number of products available to assist with mobility issues faced. The PROBLEM, unfortunately is that most of these solutions have been designed to be purely functional and seem to disregard the importance of the user’s desire to feel good about using the product and to look stylish as a result. Our SOLUTION is the TRIPLE TREAD trike; a unique lightweight, robust and visually attractive tricycle suitable for use by persons with physical disability or other balance issues. It uses the principles of Ackerman steering geometry which overcomes the issues of poor stability and tyre wear that are associated with dual-wheel steering on a fixed axle. With the addition of independent suspension and specialist engineered parallelogram tilt geometry at each axle; our system will enable both front wheels to safely navigate undulating road surfaces. These technical and design developments along with its aesthetic appearance will mark the Triple Tread trike out from the rest of the products currently on the market.

Insight & Impact

I have Multiple Sclerosis. Cycling can give me increased independence but I am wobbly; as with other neurological problems I cannot balance. The National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends aerobic exercise such as cycling for people suffering from motor weakness or reduced cardiovascular fitness as a result of MS. Tricycles available are uninspiring and recumbent versions are very low to the ground against traffic and can feel unsafe on the roads. I want people like me to have access to a tricycle that looks totally different from the conventional design you may have come across as a child. Our aim is to bring a new choice for a cool, new trike to the market that will encourage social inclusion and positive self-esteem for its proud owner. We want to create a new paradigm of public attitude towards less able-bodied people and challenge misconceptions. Dynamic mobility solutions such as Triple Tread can help people be positively noticed when venturing outdoors, our stylish trike should excite the attention of others and give the rider a sense of pride in using it, opening up opportunities for fun, family activities and social engagement with others.
